STATEWIDE LIBRARY ARCHIVES MUSEUM PROJECT COMMUNITY WORKSHOP

JUNEAU, ALASKA, On Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 7:00PM the design team and the State of Alaska will be hosting an open forum workshop for the SLAM. Design documents are nearing completion and construction is just around the corner. Join us for a presentation of design renderings, a review of innovations in energy efficiency, and a workshop on exhibits. Learn more about the activity you’ve seen on site and help us imagine the new eagle tree. The workshop will be held upstairs at the Alaska State Museum located at 395 Whittier Street in Juneau.

SLAM Energy Efficiency Update

Energy efficiency has been a primary goal of the SLAM project since its inception, and recent engineering efforts have led to some exciting discoveries. The project is unique in that it must carefully manage both sensible heat (what you feel) and latent heat (moisture in the air). A constant temperature and humidity range is vital to protecting the treasures housed in the building. The extremes of Juneau’s Alaskan maritime climate mean that the building’s mechanical systems must be constantly working to maintain this balance.

There are many sources of heating/cooling loads in SLAM, but the two that contribute most to energy usage are heat transfer through the building envelope and tempering of outside air needed to maintain a healthy indoor environment for artifacts and people. The SLAM team has been working diligently to design a robust building envelope that greatly exceeds the baseline requirements of the International Energy Code. Simultaneously we have been finding ways to ‘recycle’ energy within the building so it is not lost to the environment. Heat recovery ‘wheels’ are proposed for all five outside air handlers. These wheels have the capacity to recover up to 80% of the energy that would otherwise be lost to the outdoors.

The baseline heating system includes electric and oil-fired boilers that can adapt to the most economical source of energy. With this redundancy the building is able to maintain a stable environment even if one of the fuel sources goes offline due to unforeseen circumstances. The baseline heating system also anticipates a future connection to district heating. Willoughby district landowners are currently working together on a study that looks at the feasibility of a bio-fuel fired district heating plant. When this plant comes online SLAM will be ready to connect to it via a simple heat exchanger.

In a few weeks a test well will be drilled on site to make a final determination on the feasibility of seawater cooling and heating for the building. Seawater holds promise to meet most of the sensible cooling needs of the building, and seawater heat pumps hold promise for supplying the lower temperature heating systems in the building, specifically radiant slabs on the first floor and snow melt systems on the parking access ramp.

She will primarily be meeting with Jim Simard, Paul, Sorel and Steve. Note that exhibits and digital archives will be key topics at the next meeting in late February or early March.
• Roz Estime (lab planner) will be in town Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, primarily meeting with Ellen and Scott.
• Kacey Jurgens will be dropping in to meet with various people to discuss specific room layouts.
• The site design team will be working in the background all day Wednesday to discuss site access, drainage, utilities and landscaping.

Concept Workshop - Juneau, Alaska

In June, the design team rejoined for a 3-day workshop to discuss the concept designs for the project. Just as in the first workshop, the concept workshop kicked-off on Wendesday with the leadership team meeting to go over the project's progress thus far, as well as the itinerary and goals for the days ahead.

One main focus over the 3 days was on the topic of Collecting and Cataloguing. These discussions were led by Laura Millar. Design team work sessions, leadership meetings and open discussion meetings were also held throughout the workshop. A number of radio interviews were conducted as a way to inform the public of the team's progress and also to announce the public workshop being help Thursday evening. This was much like the public meeting in April, open to LAM staff as well as Juneau residents to give them an opportunity to speak with the design team and voice their opinions on the project.

Masterplanning Workshop - Juneau, Alaska

The design team gathered in mid-April for a 4-day intensive Masterplanning Workshop in Juneau. The workshop kicked-off on Monday with a leadership committee meeting to review the goals and strategies of the project, and to go over the plans and agendas for the week ahead.

Each day started with a combined LAM staff meeting following a specific theme. Tuesday’s topic covered the importance of integration and long-term sustainability of the project, as well as the importance of preserving and protecting the collections. Wednesday’s meeting focused on the public experience and how design would affect the patron. Thursday morning’s meeting wrapped up the week with a summary of everything covered throughout the workshop.

Group interviews were spread throughout the week for each main division: Library, Archives, and Museum, with additional group interviews for Administration and Technology Services.

Other highlights of the week were a public workshop open to LAM staff and Juneau residents, giving them an opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns; and on the last evening an Open House/Drop-in session was held for those interested in seeing a display of week’s work.
